Healthy Beverage…No More Energy Drinks

A study published recently by Frontiers Health has exposed some health risks to drinking energy drinks, some already known..some unknown. It is well known that the energy drinks increase heart rate and blood pressure. Energy drinks (ED) can have up to 400mg of sugar per ounce which far exceeds a cup of coffee which contains 95mg per the whole cup (8oz). In addition to caffeine, EDs contain high fructose corn syrup and sugar. Both of these suppress the immune system, while stimulating the adrenals and pancreas while the body finds its way back to balance. We haven’t even gotten to the stimulatory herbs that the EDs contain which stimulate the heart. In addition to the sugar and high fructose corn syrup, many of these beverages contain chemical sweetners such as aspertame which are known neurotoxins. Neurotoxins contribute to weight gain, anxiety and depression.

With all of these ingredients put together, consuming an energy drink essentially puts the body into fight or flight. Chronic consumption of EDs will contribute to chronic insomnia and mental imbalances such as those listed above.  If a person needs an energy drink to get through the day, it’s time to ask oneself “why do I need this”, or “why can’t I function without this stimulation?”. We all get tired sometimes and it’s ok to moderately use caffeine. However, the EDs have so many stimulatory ingredients at such high amounts, that dependence on them will contribute to long term health problems such as high blood pressure, anxiety, insomnia, depression, and diabetes.

So if you depend on such a beverage as this to get through the day, it is time to get help in restoring your own natural energy. To find out why you are lacking energy, blood tests may need to be done to check thyroid function and other hormones such as Testosterone which help with stamina.

There are healthier beverages that one can choose to help get through the day and with a healthy lifestyle can turn your body back into a young race horse. Herbal beverages such as this one breaks down fats to unleash the energy stored in your body. They can also help with digestion so that you can get more energy from your food.

If your energy level is 8/10 but you have one energy drink a day, I would cut that to half. Your unmasked energy would then be a 4/10…which means your body is not functioning like it can. Naturopathic doctors are great at uncovering the cause to chronic fatigue, whether it be hormones, lifestyle, stress, or a little of all of it. Detoxing and freeing yourself from cravings will allow you to make healthier long term choices in food and beverages..because your choices will be based with the intention of re-fueling versus stimulating.

Alternative Treatments for Anxiety and Depression

Suffering from anxiety and depression is disruptive to one’s physical health, as well as to their relationships and work life. When you have anxiety, the body’s stress response is out of balance and over-worked. The most common conventional treatment, which focuses on the symptoms, is to prescribe SSRI’s for depression, and benzodiazapines for anxiety and its related symptom of insomnia. Benzodiazapines and anti-depressants further the brain imbalance of neurotransmitters…the medications actually add another layer to the disease. There are alternative treatments for anxiety and depression that are widely used and effective.

When going to a naturopathic physician, the focus is on finding the CAUSE of the mental/emotional imbalance. The areas that I look at include:

1. Lifestyle – how much of your daily life is stimulating? (coffee, sugar, TV, technology)

2.  Neurotransmitters – Serotonin and GABA are calming. Glutamate, Adrenaline, and Norepinephrine
are exciting to the nervous system.

3. Digestive Health – Imbalances in the microbiome produces bacterial metabolites that cross the
blood brain barrier.

4. Genetic pathways – DNA testing and gene therapy is a cutting edge way to treat the underlying cause of disease and symptoms.

5. Mental outlook – According to Viktor Frankl in his book Man’s Search for Meaning, one’s attitude can make or break your day.

Once the cause is determined, the appropriate treatment will be implemented. By treating the cause(s) of disease, the symptoms resolve themselves and the use of chemical substances that have side effects and addiction properties can be avoided.

Insulin Resistance

If you’ve had trouble losing weight, you may have insulin resistance and not know it. Basic blood tests may show a normal or slightly high normal fasting blood glucose which would not alert your doctor to order further testing. A glucose tolerance test will expose insulin resistance. After consuming a sweet beverage, the patient’s blood is drawn up to 4 times to measure fasting and blood sugar levels.

The problem with insulin resistance is that the cells are no longer sensitive to the hormone…they are resistant to it. Therefore, insulin is unable to open the cell’s door to let glucose in. This results in  high insulin and glucose levels in the blood. Yet the cells themselves are malnourished which results in tissue weakness and susceptibility to disease. It’s like standing before a table full of food with tape over your mouth.

Unfortunately insulin causes an increase in body fat when it is inappropriately high on a consistent basis, which then leads to increased morbidity.  What causes insulin resistance? A diet high in simple carbohydrates over a long period of time causes the cells to be less sensitive to both sugar and insulin, causing these to rise in the blood. A family history of diabetes may also be a contributing factor.

The consequences of elevated insulin is increased body fat, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, and elevated DHT. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a strong form of testosterone. 5 alpha reductase is the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. Elevated insulin causes high alpha reductase activity, resulting in more DHT being produced. For women, this can be very negative as it causes hair growth on the face, back and abdomen. The most effective way to treat this is first eliminate all simple carbohydrates.  There are also herbs that may be prescribed to inhibit the 5-alpha reductase enzyme.

If you think you may have insulin resistance fill in the contact request for a complimentary 10 minute consultation.

Naturopathic Pain Management

Inflammation

Chronic pain is multi-factoral and should be treated as much. Naturopathic medicine is holistic in that the physicians take into account stress, lifestyle, diet and any other contributing factors that may be causing the pain.

Stress causes the release of inflammatory chemicals, while suppressing the immune system. Lowering your stress through meditation and gentle movement provides a release for excess nervous energy.  Once released, the stress will not result in increased inflammation. One’s diet may be pro-inflammatory so making adjustments could also be quite impactful. The pillow, sleeping positions, and the way you sit in a car or on a couch for prolonged periods of time will cause imbalances in the hips which contribute to low back and neck pain.

In addition to looking at the patient’s lifestyle habits, many modalities are available that do not have side effects. Steroid injections and opoids used in conventional pain management clinics do not address the cause, and come with severe consequences such as weaker joints and opoid addiction.

Naturopathic Treatments used in our office include:

Trigger point therapy: superficial injections with homeopathy to treat spasmodic muscles

Acupuncture with TDP lamp: Acupuncture with Infrared resets the nervous system and relaxes stiff muscles

Prolotherapy: A regenerative injection which is great for osteoarthritis and for stabilizing and strengthening joints. Formulas are injected into and around the joint to promote inflammation and repair of injured and weak ligaments and tendons.

Stem Cell Therapy: This regenerative injection contains stem cells to promote repair of thin and weak ligaments and tendons.

Gua Sha: brief targeted deep tissue massage with a Bian stone and Woodlock oil

Neuro/Myofascial Release: Assisted deep stretching to release impinged nerves, spasmodic muscles, and increase range of motion.

In office treatments along with appropriate lifestyle changes are incredibly effective for long term pain relief and healing of the affected tissues.

DNA Testing for Chronic Inflammation

Chronic pain, inflammation and digestive problems could be due to a buildup of noxious chemicals in the body. Enzymes such as SOD/Catalase and NOS help prevent the buildup of dangerous free radicals in the body. If these enzymes are not working properly then oxidative stress happens. By testing your DNA through 23andMe and getting their raw data file interpreted, you the patient will see which pathways are deficient and need nutritional support. Targeted Gene Therapy is a cutting edge new therapy that is getting great results!

Schedule your free 10 min consultation online at www.naturopathicdoctorforyou.com to find out how to get started.

MethylGenetic Nutrition: A Comprehensive Solution

methyl geneticFor the first time ever, methylGenetic Nutritional Analysis provides patients with detailed information on how your genes work at important functions such as detoxification, assimilation of nutrients, and the clearance of free radicals and inflammatory chemicals. It can even look at a patient’s neurotransmitters which is important in cases of anxiety, depression, or insomnia.

The DNA lab that is used is through 23andMe. Once you get your 23andMe results back you can access a raw data report that has all the detailed information on about 20 different pathways. It looks at how well the body detoxifies and clears harmful chemicals. It also looks at a number of cellular energy pathways. You can see how well you absorb fats and carbohydrates, and how your digestive system may be affected by certain chemicals. Just like any other part of the body, your genes are affected by nutrition. By compensating for genetic insufficiencies, one can improve the quality of life and prevent chronic degenerative disease. Targeted gene therapy is also great for anti-aging purposes.

To get started, access the raw data file within your 23andMe results and have it interpreted by a practitioner who has been trained on the methylgenetic nutritional software program. Once the report is analyzed, we will work together to come up with a prioritized protocol to start scavenging the dangerous inflammatory chemicals and increase cellular energy.

Feel free to schedule a 10 minute complimentary consultation to get your questions answered.

Understanding Your 23andMe Results

If you have already done the 23andme DNA test, you can download a raw data file that will give you so much more information than what the lab provides. This report will need to be interpreted by a software program that some practitioners have been trained on. Watch the video and read below to find out what kind of genetic information will be revealed by the program.

To get started, go to 23andme and order your DNA test kit. It is a salivary test that you will send back to the lab in their self addressed envelope. In about 3-4 weeks, you will get an email with your results. Contact us when you get this and I will tell you how to access the raw data report.

The raw data report analyzes the following 5 important pathways:

Clearance of ammonia, urea, and perioxynitrite.
Assimilation of fatty acids
Manufacturing and clearing of neurotransmitters
The processing of histamine
The amount of inflammation you have in your gut due to dysbiosis.

Naturopathic Pain Management

neck-painAll of us will experience chronic pain at some point in our lives. Whether it be after an acute injury or from a disease process, the affect of chronic pain on our lives is expansive. It limits our activities, thereby impacting our work and relationships. The most common methods of treating chronic pain is chemically through pain pills and anti-inflammatories. These methods are appropriate following a treatment, surgical procedure, or after the initial injury. However, using chemicals long term pain carries the risk of physical and psychological dependence. In addition, many of these medications have physical side effects such as grogginess and digestive disorders, not to mention kidney and liver damage.

If you suffer from chronic pain, it is vital to look into alternative measures for managing your pain or finding a cure for the underlying cause. The great thing about using alternative medicine, is that these therapies not only help reduce pain, they also address the cause and help the body to heal itself. For example, acupuncture treats the nerves that innervate the muscles, so not only does it help relax the muscles but it also treats the cause.

Natural anti-inflammatories exist to replace ibuprophen, and in high doses can be just as effective. These herbal and nutritional remedies help the body’s own anti-inflammatory processes come back into balance.

Electro-slim or TENS helps with muscle spasm by treating the nerves and increasing circulation in the muscles.

Finally, chiropractic manipulation and massage is widely available and well known for their beneficial effects in managing long term pain.

With so many alternatives available, there is no reason to addict one’s body to chemicals that not only have harmful side effects but do not even treat the cure. It is well documented that the benefits of these powerful alternative therapies far outweigh the costs.

Garden Of Health, llc offers many pain management modalities such as Acupuncture, Prolotherapy (regenerative injections), natural anti-inflammatory remedies, and trigger point injections.
