Testosterone is the go-getter hormone. It gives us stamina, confidence, lean muscle mass, and strength. An increasing number of both men and women are deficient in Testosterone. This is due to increased body fat, diets high in processed foods, and the conversion of testosterone to estrogen in aging men.  In peri-menopausal and menopausal women, adrenal insufficiency contributes to suboptimal testosterone levels. It’s important to note the difference in how conventional medicine approaches testosterone compared to the naturopathic approach. We look at hormone levels from an anti-aging and quality of life perspective, therefore the desired levels in blood work will be higher than if you are getting evaluated by your family doctor.

Symptoms of Low Testosterone

Testosterone deficiency leads to lethargy, depression, insomnia, low sex drive, joint injury, and fat gain. If you have these symptoms, you should ask your doctor to test your testosterone levels, as many of these symptoms such as insomnia and depression may be treated by medications such as prozac or xanax. This way of treating symptoms without investigating the cause leads to added layers of imbalance due to the medications

Testing and Treatment

Initial testing involves a blood test to check Testosterone levels, Estrogen, PSA (for men), cholesterol, liver enzymes, and sex hormone binding globulin. The ideal range for men is 500ng/dl or above. For women the range is 15-70ng/dl.

Here at Naturopathic Clinic of Phoenix we offer a program that includes an initial overview of systems and comprehensive testing for both the sex hormones and thyroid.  Digestion, energy levels, cardiovascular, and immune system health is evaluated for potential imbalances that may be contributing to your symptoms.  At the follow up visits, we review dietary recommendations to detox the liver and enhance fat mobilization.
